Background of the Study
Energy supply remains a significant challenge for Gombe South Local Government Area (LGA) in Gombe State, Nigeria, affecting economic development and quality of life. The geopolitical dynamics that influence energy distribution in the region are multifaceted, involving political decisions at the local, state, and federal levels, as well as the region's access to natural resources and infrastructure development. Geopolitical factors such as political affiliation, regional power dynamics, and proximity to major energy-producing areas have shaped energy policies in Gombe South (Isah & Umar, 2024). Gombe South’s location, relatively distant from Nigeria’s primary energy hubs in the Niger Delta, affects its access to reliable power supply, further compounded by infrastructural deficits and political rivalries. This study aims to assess the geopolitical determinants influencing energy supply in Gombe South, identifying the key drivers and barriers to energy development in the area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Energy supply in Gombe South has been characterized by irregularities and inefficiencies, despite the region’s potential for energy development. The lack of reliable and consistent power supply has hindered socio-economic growth and development in the area. Political and geographical factors, including Gombe South's position within the state and its relationship with federal energy policies, contribute significantly to the inadequate energy supply. This study seeks to understand the impact of these geopolitical factors on energy provision and their implications for development in Gombe South.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of geopolitical factors in shaping energy supply policies in Gombe South LGA.
To evaluate the impact of political affiliations and regional dynamics on energy provision in Gombe South.
To recommend strategies for overcoming geopolitical barriers to ensure reliable energy supply in Gombe South.
1.4 Research Questions
How do geopolitical factors influence energy supply policies in Gombe South LGA?
What are the major barriers to consistent energy provision in the region, considering its political and geographical context?
How can energy supply be improved in Gombe South by addressing these geopolitical factors?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Geopolitical factors, including political dynamics and regional resource distribution, significantly affect the energy supply in Gombe South LGA.
Inadequate energy infrastructure and political conflicts hinder the efficient distribution of energy in Gombe South.
Addressing geopolitical challenges will improve the reliability and consistency of energy supply in Gombe South.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide critical insights into the role of geopolitical determinants in shaping energy policies and supply in Gombe South. The findings will inform local and state policymakers, energy providers, and advocacy groups on strategies to improve energy access in the region, thus fostering economic development and improving living standards (Isah & Umar, 2024). This research is particularly significant given the role of energy as a driver of sustainable development and poverty reduction.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Gombe South LGA in Gombe State and focuses on the influence of geopolitical factors on energy supply. Limitations include access to government reports on energy distribution and political factors that may influence the availability of data.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
Geopolitical Determinants: Political, social, and geographical factors that influence policies and decisions in a specific region.
Energy Supply: The provision of electricity and other forms of energy to meet the needs of a population.
Gombe South Local Government Area: A region within Gombe State, Nigeria, affected by inconsistent energy supply and geopolitical challenges (Isah & Umar, 2024).
